I have photographed all over The Nation’s Capital as a DC engagement photographer, and Rock Creek Park may just be one of my favorite outdoor locations! From the charming historic buildings, to the variety of backdrops and nearby downtown. This spot should be at the top of your list when planning Washington DC engagement photos!
Rock Creek Park is a massive urban oasis in the heart of Washington, DC, stretching over 1,700 acres. It runs from the National Zoo up through the northwestern part of the city and extends into Maryland. This park is easily accessible from nearby neighborhoods like Georgetown, Adams Morgan, and Cleveland Park. Making it a convenient yet secluded spot for couples looking for a quiet escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Plus, because it is such a massive park, you have a variety of really unique backdrops.
Speaking of the variety of backdrops, I would be remiss if I didn’t share even a few of my favorites! Seriously, this park has it all. Stunning natural landscapes, peaceful trails, and hidden gems, this park offers a dreamy and romantic atmosphere that I cannot get over!
This part of the country is lush in native foliage, and Rock Creek Park embraces it! Greenery, scenic meadows, winding trails and peaceful intimate spaces. If you are wanting an outdoorsy vibe to your DC engagement photos without making the trek into the mountains, then this is the spot for you! In addition, the beauty continues through every season. So no matter the time of year, this is a great choice.
We all know I love a little historic charm! It’s what makes DC so special, so its a shame if we don’t embrace it. There are a few locations within Rock Creek Park that are both historic and beautiful. Boulder Bridge is a stone bridge that dates back to the early 1900s and has such a fairytale feel. Now, it is part of a trail in the Park that is easy to access, and allows pets!
Another spot worth mentioning is Peirce Mill. This mill operated from 1829-1897 and was restored by the National Park Service in the 1930s. In its hey day the mill used moving water from the creek to ground corn, wheat and rye. However, today it serves as a historic site that educated visitors on 1800s engineering and local history. As well as serving as a great backdrop for your engagement photos!
No matter where you choose to have your Washington DC engagement photos, be sure to enjoy the moment! The candid shots from your engagement session are what tells your love story best. The backdrop definitely enhances your photos, but more than a beautiful location I want to capture your personalities and love for one another!
