Doing portraits as a Baltimore newborn photographer is so rewarding. A newborn session isn’t just about the baby; it’s about capturing the wonder of bringing a new member into your whole family. Whether you’re doing newborn photos at home or at the studio, let me share some ideas for what to wear for newborn photos. I’ve got great ideas for both you and your tribe.

What to Wear for Newborn Photos

Most moms and dads already have some outfits in mind for the little one—in fact, it’s probably going to be hard to pick from all those new adorable outfits. But parents, siblings, and sometimes even grandparents can be a part of this session! What to wear for newborn photos? The guidelines are pretty simple for everybody involved.

Neutral Colors

When you’re picking an outfit for a newborn session, I always recommend picking neutral colors. Whether it’s beige, green, gray, or blue, neutral colors look beautiful on every skin tone. Even leaning in to lighter yellows or browns is an option. I like neutrals because they don’t draw attention. Instead, it puts the focus of the images on the smiles, feelings, and details of family and baby.

Soft Fabrics

Next, many people don’t think about what to wear for newborn photos in terms of fabric. Newborn sessions include tender moments of carrying the baby, so it’s wise to pick a fabric that is soft to the touch and won’t irritate new skin! Of course, natural fabrics like cotton or linen can be gentle and breathable. Check out my Benable for some examples.

Comfortable to Wear

As mom is recovering from birth, don’t feel pressured to wear clothes that are tight or uncomfortable to your newborn session. There’s nothing wrong with a cozy sweater or a stretchy dress during these pictures! If you’re bringing little siblings along, also consider putting them in rompers or shorts to provide easy movement. If you’re comfortable, we’ll be able to tell on camera.

Seriously, don’t stress about what to wear for newborn photos. You probably have some comfy neutrals hanging in your closet already! Again, our focus is on the precious moments between you and your new family. The newborn phase goes by so quickly, so don’t hesitate to reach out here to book your session with a Baltimore newborn photographer.
