If you’re dreaming of a timeless, romantic wedding venue nestled in a storybook setting, let me introduce you to one of my favorite hidden gems: Liriodendron Mansion in Bel Air, Maryland. Just about 30 miles from Baltimore and 70 miles from Washington, D.C., this historic estate offers the perfect balance of elegance, charm, and nature for couples looking to tie the knot in a breathtaking, one-of-a-kind location! Whether you’re envisioning a garden ceremony surrounded by wisteria or a cozy reception inside a grand mansion filled with old-world charm, the Liriodendron delivers… and then some!
If you know me, then you know how much of a sucker I am for old world charm! Built in 1898, the Liriodendron Mansion was once the summer home of Dr. Howard A. Kelly, one of the founding physicians of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Today, this Georgian Revival-style mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and preserved by the nonprofit Liriodendron Foundation.
The historic architecture, complete with sweeping staircases, marble fireplaces, and antique furnishings, gives every wedding here a deeply romantic, vintage feel. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re stepping into a Jane Austen novel. That happens to be equip with modern amenities and plenty of room to celebrate!
Located in the heart of Harford County, Liriodendron Mansion feels like a secluded oasis, yet it’s easily accessible from Baltimore, D.C., and even Pennsylvania! Out-of-town guests will love the convenience, and you’ll love how peaceful and picturesque the setting feels. It’s like your own private estate tucked into nature. In addition, there’s ample parking on-site, and the surrounding neighborhood of Bel Air offers plenty of local charm, restaurants, and accommodations for your guests.
One of the best things about the Liriodendron is how versatile it is for weddings of different sizes and styles. Whether you’re planning an intimate elopement or a 100+ guest celebration, the mansion offers both indoor and outdoor options that are truly stunning.
The grounds are lush and romantic, with blooming flowers, wooded paths, and open lawns for mingling or a cozy cocktail hour. You can exchange vows on the wisteria-covered terrace or beside the working fountain in the garden. In addition, the venue provides white lawn chairs for outdoor ceremonies, blending beautifully with the natural setting.
The mansion’s interior features elegant parlors, high ceilings, and period décor that feels both grand and intimate. You can comfortably host up to 120 guests for a seated dinner or reception indoors. The rooms are perfect for a classic black-tie vibe or a more relaxed, vintage-chic aesthetic.
Both the bride and groom (or any combination of partners!) will have access to private getting-ready suites with plenty of natural light! It is perfect for pre-wedding photos and moments with your crew.
From a photographer’s perspective (hi, that’s me!), Liriodendron Mansion is a total dream! The variety of backdrops is unreal. The grand staircase is perfect for elegant bridal portraits, or use it as part of your grand entrance into your reception like Morgan and Eric did. The garden paths and fountain create a magical setting for first looks or couple’s portraits. And the interior rooms offer cozy, moody lighting that’s perfect for classic, editorial-style photos. Whether you want those tear-jerking first look photos under the trees or a golden hour glow across the terrace, this venue makes it easy to capture both the big emotions and little details of your day.
Honestly, why not?! Liriodendron Mansion isn’t just a venue, it’s a full experience. It offers a rare combination of elegance, history, and natural beauty that’s hard to beat in Maryland. If you’re a couple who loves timeless design, meaningful history, and dreamy garden vibes, this could be your perfect match.
