There’s nothing quite like a Peabody Library Wedding. Tucked in the heart of Baltimore, the George Peabody Library feels like stepping into a storybook. Six tiers of cast-iron balconies rise toward a massive skylight, with thousands of antique books creating an awe-inspiring backdrop. As a Baltimore wedding photographer, this venue has quickly become one of my favorites to shoot at!

Often called a “cathedral of books,” this historic venue blends old-world charm with timeless elegance, making it one of the most sought-after wedding locations in Maryland. Whether you’re planning an intimate celebration or a grand affair, getting married at the Peabody Library promises a day filled with beauty, romance, and unforgettable photographs.

Venue Ambiance

Set in the historic Peabody Institute in Baltimore, the George Peabody Library dazzles with its soaring six-tier cast‑iron balconies, ornate gold‑leaf details, and black-and-white marble floors beneath a luminous skylight. It’s an architectural wonder often ranked among the world’s most beautiful libraries. The ambiance is both majestic and intimate, offering an unforgettable backdrop for your love story.

I recently photographed Ēván and Maggie Peabody Library wedding and was so impressed by how they highlighted the unique beauty of the venue. They opted for the Edison bulb string lights to hang over head, which adds such a warm and intimate vibe. Meanwhile, their tablescapes were gorgeous! Littered with custom floral arrangements and earthy tones.

Booking

To have a Peabody Library wedding there are a few restrictions when it comes to availability. The Peabody is actually an active research and public library, which creates limits for events. Weddings are available Friday–Sunday after 5 PM (Monday–Thursday rentals are possible after 8 PM with special approval), and events must conclude by midnight. In addition, ceremonies require a full catered reception. Meaning that there are no standalone ceremony bookings.

Please note that you are able to book more hours at the venue for an additional cost. More on pricing here.

Guest Capacity & Layout

As a Baltimore wedding photographer, I do feel that the Peabody Library can accommodate to most couples getting married in the area with room for up to 200 guests. With a dance floor, the space can hold up to 170 guests seated. However, if you are planning to have a live band, then it is recommended that your party is closer to 150-160 guests. Without a dance floor, you will be able to seat up to 200 guests.

In addition to the main floor, or reading room, there is a space for your cocktail hour in between your ceremony and reception. Cocktail hour flows into the adjacent Exhibit Gallery, an elegant space featuring rotating exhibits and perfect for mingling before the main event. The space features rotating exhibits throughout the year, all created by Johns Hopkins University curators. In addition to cocktail hour, you can use this space for gathering guests before the ceremony. As well, it remains open throughout the evening for quiet moments together, photos and simply a break from dancing the night away!

What’s Included

When you book a Peabody Library wedding you will have access to a lot more than you think! Of course, you will have access to the reading room and exhibit gallery. In addition, you will have setup and tear down time for your vendors to work their magic!

But, where the real value come in is in the rentals that are provided with the venue. You will have access to wooden folding chairs, round tables, high-top tables, and a bridal preparation suite! All of these amenities are included making your planning less stressful and your wedding cost a bit lower. As well you will have the venue manager, student worker, security, and optional coat check to use throughout your wedding!

Planning Tips & Insights

When it comes to securing your date at the Peabody Library, the process is straightforward but competitive. You can place a hold on your desired date for up to seven days without obligation, but once you’re ready to book, a 50% deposit is required, with the remaining balance due 60 days before your wedding. I personally recommend booking as early as possible, as dates fill quickly and the venue maintains a curated list of approved vendors. In addition, hiring an experienced wedding planner to navigate the venue’s detailed guidelines, ensuring everything runs smoothly on the big day, will make a big difference!
