There’s something incredibly special about a family photo with grandparents. It’s not just another snapshot. It’s a timeless reminder of love, legacy, and the quiet strength that holds generations together. As a Baltimore family photographer, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful these images can be. Whether it’s the warm smile of a grandmother holding her newest grandbaby, or the proud, gentle hand of a grandfather resting on the shoulder of a grown grandchild,. These moments become treasured keepsakes for years to come.
A family photo with grandparents is more than just a pretty picture, it’s a way to capture your family’s story in a single frame. These portraits often end up being the most emotional ones, because they highlight connection, wisdom, and the passage of time.
In this session we had just the three generations, however whenever possible I recommend including as many generations as possible! You never know how long you have with your loved ones, so be sure to capture all those generations when you can!
When planning a session with grandparents, choosing the right location can make all the difference. I love photographing families in places that feel relaxed, beautiful, and meaningful. Depending on the health and mobility of your grandparents, as well as yourself postpartum, will depend on the location.
If you and the grandparents are feeling up to it we can visit a more quiet park or garden. Baltimore, DC and the surrounding areas has dozens of beautiful and quiet locations. We will be sure to choose one with lots of benches and areas to rest!
However, if you want to stay home in a more comfortable environment, I 100% recommend it! As a new mom myself I understand the need to be in your own space to relax with your baby. And if you want some outdoor photos, then we can always go into your backyard or front porch for some fresh air!
Wherever we go, I’ll guide your family into natural, connection-filled moments that bring out everyone’s personality—especially the grandparents.
Outfits can really elevate the look of your family portraits. For a family photo with grandparents, I recommend choosing a soft, neutral color palette (think cream, soft blues, muted greens, or light gray) that complements everyone without being too matchy. However, the most important thing to remember is to put your comfort first!
Let’s be real, sometimes grandparents aren’t super excited to be in front of the camera. And that’s okay! My job is to make sure they feel relaxed, respected, and celebrated throughout the session. I always take time to chat, share a few laughs, and gently guide them into poses that feel natural. Whether it’s sitting on a bench, standing with the family, or holding hands with their grandkids. I keep it simple and heartfelt. No stiff poses, just real connection. In addition, I will move at a slower pace if needed, so they never feel rushed. And I always make space for those candid in-between moments that often end up being everyone’s favorite.
Some of the most beautiful images come from unplanned moments! I encourage the candid moments like a grandchild giggling as Grandpa tells a story, or grandma brushing hair out of her daughter’s face. These moments become nostalgic photos that you will all appreciate!
I also love creating seated portraits with grandparents in the center, surrounded by their kids and grandkids. It visually tells the story of the legacy they’ve built. And when possible, we get individual shots with each grandchild.
Life moves fast, and while we’re often good at documenting milestones like engagements or weddings, the everyday beauty of our families sometimes gets overlooked. But when grandparents are part of your family portraits, you’re creating something truly meaningful. These are images that celebrate your family’s story across generations!
