Let’s talk about newborn photos with siblings. I’ve photographed dozens of newborn sessions over the years, many of them with older siblings involved, and I can confidently say there are benefits and challenges either way. Every family is different, every child has their own personality, and every newborn session unfolds a little differently.
All that is to say, I think they’re worth it every time.
Let me address some of the biggest concerns I hear from parents and give you a little more confidence about including your little ones in the session together.

Let’s address the biggest concern right away. Most parents aren’t worried about the baby. They’re worried about their toddler. What if they refuse to participate or if they won’t sit still? What if they have a meltdown halfway through the session?
The good news is that none of those things prevent beautiful photos from happening. In all my years as a Baltimore family photographer, I’ve never had a family leave without meaningful images because their child didn’t “behave.” Children aren’t meant to perform for the camera. They’re meant to be children.
Some toddlers are excited to show off their new baby brother or sister. Others need a little time to warm up. Both are completely normal, and both can lead to beautiful photographs.

One of the biggest misconceptions about sibling newborn photography is that everyone needs to be looking at the camera and smiling for a photo to be successful. That’s rarely what I’m looking for.
I’m watching for the way your toddler reaches for the baby’s hand. The proud smile that appears when they talk about being a big brother. The curiosity in a big sister’s eyes as she peeks into the bassinet.
These moments may seem small now, but they’re the details that tell the story of this season. They’re the moments parents rarely think to ask for, but they’re often the photographs they end up framing.

While the session itself may feel a little unpredictable at times, I’ve never walked away from a newborn session with siblings thinking it would have been better without the siblings involved.
In fact, newborn photos with siblings often become some of the most meaningful images in the entire gallery. They capture the beginning of a relationship that will grow and change over a lifetime. The curiosity, the excitement, the adjustment, and the love that exists from the very beginning.
Sometimes the little bit of chaos is part of the story.

When parents imagine their newborn family photos, they often picture everyone smiling perfectly at the camera. And we’ll absolutely create some beautiful portraits together. But years from now, the images you treasure most may be the ones you never expected.
The way your toddler rested their head on the baby’s blanket. The way your newborn fit perfectly in your arms. The laughter that erupted when nobody was doing exactly what they were supposed to be doing.
Those fleeting moments often become the photographs that transport you back to this chapter of your life. Because the newborn stage doesn’t last long. Neither does the season of becoming a big brother or big sister.

When siblings are involved, flexibility is everything. I never expect toddlers to sit still for an hour or smile on command. Instead, I create a relaxed environment where children can be themselves and parents can focus on enjoying time with their family.
Whether your newborn session takes place in your Baltimore home or another meaningful location, my goal is to document genuine connection rather than forced perfection. The best images happen when families feel comfortable enough to simply be together. That’s where the real magic lives.

In my opinion, absolutely. Will a newborn session with a toddler be a little less predictable? Sometimes. Will your older child have their own agenda? Almost certainly. But that’s part of what makes these images so meaningful.
Newborn photos with siblings aren’t about creating perfect portraits. They’re about preserving a moment in your family’s story that will never happen again. One day, your children will be grown. They won’t remember these first days together, but they’ll be able to see them. They’ll see how tiny they were, how much they were loved, and how their relationship began before either of them can remember it.
If you’re looking for a Baltimore family photographer to capture newborn photos with siblings in a relaxed and authentic way, I’d love to help document this exciting new chapter for your family. Reach out!
